A member of the Orthopoxviridae family of poxviruses, the monkeypox virus (MPXV) is closely linked to the variola virus, which causes smallpox. It is thought that MPXV, which is endemic in the rainforests of central and western Africa, is predominantly a zoonotic illness that spreads to people sporadically through contact with sick animals or animal tissues. Clinical symptoms of MPXV in humans include fever, rash, widespread pox lesions, and respiratory symptoms and closely resemble those of smallpox infection.
