Background of MPX Detection
MPXV is a member of the Orthopoxvirus (OPXV) family. Monkeypox (MPX), caused by the virus, is a zoonotic disease that spreads to humans through direct contact or consumption of infected animals. Lymphoid hyperplasia is one of the most common symptoms of monkeypox and can be used to diagnose the disease. Furthermore, because the symptoms of the disease are similar to those of smallpox, it is clinically difficult to differentiate MPX from smallpox. In recent years, laboratory diagnostics provide attractive tools for disease identification and monitoring, and more and more methods are being used for the diagnosis of MPX.

Laboratory Diagnosis for MPX
For decades, various laboratory methods are available for MPX diagnosis including virus isolation, immunohistochemistry in tissue, molecular diagnostics, electron microscopy, and serology. Each method plays a crucial role in MPX detection. However, the non-specificity of these tests makes it difficult to distinguish MPXV infection from other poxviruses. Recently, the Tetracore Orthopox BioThreat test provided promising results using lesion specimens from acute OPXV infection. This assay has been reported to provide reliable results for MPXV virus detection.
Tetracore Orthopox BioThreat Test for MPX
Tetracore Orthopox BioThreat test detects poxvirus antigens directly from material taken from skin lesions. In addition, the method is suitable for point-of-care diagnosis of suspected MPX cases, allowing prioritization of samples requiring further testing. Importantly, the method can be performed at ambient temperature without the demand for specialized knowledge. Therefore, this assay provides a valuable screening tool suitable for field use. It is worth noting that this test is not specific to MPXV and needs to be tested in an endemic setting. However, this assay can be used in monkeypox endemic areas, and it is important to test in endemic settings.
