This antibody can be used to identify and analyse Monkypox virus (MPV). This clone was used to identify monkypox virus via ELISA (PMID: 7513922). VACV-5C7 can be used to develop diagnostic assays which could allow for the detection of orthopox viruses, especially monkypox virus.

Monkeypox virus (MPV) is a double-stranded DNA, zoonotic virus and a species of the genus Orthopoxvirus in the family Poxviridae. It causes a disease that has similar charactersists to smallpox but with a milder rash and a lower death rate. The virus causes disease in both humans and animals.
